Questions and Answers
Q: Why is physical activity important
for women with osteoporosis?
Exercise and physical activity help to fortify women
against fracture and injury. By increasing muscular
support of weakened bones and keeping joints and muscles
flexible, exercise can help women become less vulnerable
to injury. Also, exercises that increase muscular
support of the bones are important because they improve
flexibility and balance, helping to prevent falls
and strains. Finally, regular physical exercise is
crucial to prevent further bone loss. As with all
new exercise programs, however, a person needs to
begin slowly and get assistance when appropriate.
A physical therapist can help design a program suited
to your individual needs.
