Questions and Answers
Q: I spend a lot of time working
at my desk, many hours using a computer. Which would
be more beneficial, a couple of long breaks during
the day or several shorter ones?
Research has shown that workers who take "micro-breaks"
(taking 3-5 minutes each hour) can help prevent injury
and actually raise productivity over workers who follow
a more traditional schedule. Taking numerous short
breaks lets your body recover from work easier than
one long break. It only takes a few minutes to go
through a quick stretching and exercising program
that can improve your flexibility and circulation,
and take stress off your lower back. Exercises don't
have to be elaborate. For computer users, suggested
exercises usually include shoulder shrugs, hand and
wrist stretches and neck range-of-motion exercises.
Of course, the best program is one tailored for your
specific activities.
