Questions and Answers
Q: My wife and I are putting on
an addition to our home and want to plan it carefully.
What is the best height for a work surface such as
a counter?
The right work height depends on the task you are
doing. For most regular work around the home, you
should try to position your hands at about elbow height.
For precision, your hands should be 4-6 inches above
elbow height. For heavier or more forceful work, or
work which requires downward pressure, your hands
should be 4-6 inches below elbow height.
This is an important, but often overlooked aspect
of design. The correct work height will make your
task easier and lessen your risk of injury.
